Prompt:
write an “American sonnet”.
This is the second one for today.
(See the first one here )
Combined with the use of “folly:”
for W3.

King’s Day 2024
.
Writing, with coffee beside me,
in 14 lines, an american sonnet,
under a climate stricken sky
on King’s Day, a festive event,
that used to end
in happy sharing
of second hand toys
and for mom, used earrings
with a shimmer of gold.
The folly of memory.
It’s raining now, the flag gets wet,
son brought tompoezen,
and we’re wearing orange,
sing along with the national anthem.

Netherlands? ‘The Orange’ has a sinister connotation for some of us 🙂

Yes, The Netherlands.
Our national colours are red, white and blue, but as more countries use those colours we took the name of our Royal House: The house of orange…and use that colour as our national symbol colour.
Nothing to do with hair, although some use a very bright version on the day. LOL!

We had William of Orange who burdened the world with the Orange Lodges. I have nothing against the colour per se 🙂

History is a bit different.
The Orange Order was a tribute to him, not initiated by him.
That is a vast difference.

I am not responsible for what in history people have done, without my agreement.

Yes, of course, William was long dead before the Ulster Orangemen became what they still are today. It was Protestantism as opposed to Catholicism that became such a terrible force for division.

Yes. That’s one of the reasons I’m staying away from organised religion.

“The folly of memory.”
Sums things up perfectly, vague at best, chasing future follies – life.
